Hannah's Birth Story

Wow, it has already been a week since our amazing baby girl was born. Hannah is truly a joy and we feel extremely blessed and happy. I can't even put into words how much we already love her. I look at her all the time and can't believe she is actually OUR baby! Being a mom is such a fantastic experience. As I sit and look at my baby all cuddled up sleeping, I am thankful we are on this side of the labor and delivery process! Hannah made us be very patient as we waited for her arrival. Although Nate did a good job giving snippets of our birthing experience while it was happening, I thought I would fill in a few more details to her arrival!

We first went into the hospital Tuesday morning (4/21/09) after timing contractions all night. They had been 5 minutes apart consistently so the doctor said to come on in. When we got there I was 3 cm dilated, but they don't admit you until you are at 4 cm. So, after a few hours of walking around and checking me again, I still had made no progress. The nurse also told me I was able to smile too much during the contractions, so I was still in early labor. Needless to say, I was very disappointed but I would soon realize what she was talking about with the contractions. We went home and basically I walked and walked and walked all day! The contractions continued and became much more painful as the night went on, so the doctor said to come back in that evening and they would check again. So, we headed off to the hospital and I was still just 3.5 cm dilated. Once again, they sent us home with a sleeping pill and pain medication to help me basically get through the night. The meds worked for about a couple of hours, but most of the night I was experiencing what the nurse was waiting for me to feel with the contractions. There was no way I was going to be smiling through those suckers...talk about terrible pain!

After a very long night without any sleep, we headed back to the hospital and I was finally 5 cm dilated when they checked me. We were so happy to hear that news and knew that meant we were going to have our baby that day! I got my epidural about an hour later and could finally relax and get some rest free of contractions! A couple hours later they gave me some pitocin to help me dilate more and within a couple of hours I was at 9.5 cm and ready to push! I pushed for 2 hours and her rather large head was just not coming through. At that point, we decided with the doctor to use the vacuum to get her out. She arrived about 2 contractions later at 4:26 pm. It was the most wonderful thing ever when they held her up and laid her on my chest. Nate and I could not stop crying as we held our little miracle for the first time. We couldn't believe she was 8 lbs 8 oz...we were expecting a much smaller baby! She was perfect and we could not have been more happy to have a beautiful healthy baby! I could not be more thankful for a wonderful husband as well. He was such a calming encouraging partner in the whole journey. I am absolutely in love with my 2 favorite people in the whole world, Nate and Hannah!

Baby Hannah Joy Clark has arrived! She came at 4:26 PM with the help of a vacuum. She was 8 lbs 8 oz and 21 inches. Details and pics to come after some much needed sleep.

Praise the LORD!

Erica and I are back at the hospital; this time for good! We came in around 7AM and they gave her an epidural at 8:30. If her water doesn't break by 11AM or so, they will break it. We should have the baby sometime today!

They sent us home around 11 :( Even though I'm contracting regularly every 2-5 minutes, my cervix isn't getting anymore ready. Still hoping for today!

We are sitting in the hospital waiting for more progress. It's 8:30 and we've been here since 5:30AM. No baby yet!

Learning Patience

As soon as we hit 37 weeks and the doctors told us it was safe for the baby to come at anytime, I was ready for her to be born. Two weeks later and now at 39 weeks, we are still waiting!!! The anticipation of her arrival is so exciting but so hard. Everyday I wake up and wonder if this will be the day. I am definitely learning patience. Although I am getting very uncomfortable, I am not miserable, which I am thankful for. My feet and ankles are hideously swollen and sleeping is minimal, but I know there is an end in sight. This baby has to come at some point!!! When I went to the doctor this week, he said I was still 2-3 cm dilated, but had improved to 90 % effaced. In his words, my cervix is very "ripe". Since the "ripeness" is not helping the baby come any sooner, I am hoping it helps labor not be terribly long. Who knows though! We have everything ready to go and can't wait to meet our little girl. For now, I will try to enjoy the last few days of being pregnant and the wonderful feeling of her little hands and feet kicking inside of me.

Easter Weekend Baby Shower

Happy Easter to everyone! I was sorta hoping for an Easter baby, but considering it is Sunday evening and no labor signs are present, I guess she is just not ready to come! We did have a wonderful weekend with family celebrating our risen Lord and the miracle of life he has put inside of me! We had our fourth and final shower on Saturday with family and a few very close family friends. The shower was hosted at my sister Allison's house, and everything was amzing and wonderful. It was great to have everyone there. All the showers have been so much fun, but now we are ready for this baby to come so we can use it all!!! Once again, we are overwhelmed with all of the gifts we have received and the generosity and excitement people have shown to us. We feel very ready for this baby after getting the last few things we needed: sleepers, diaper bag, changing table, pack n play, and lots of little cutesy and practical baby things. I had so much fun putting everything away tonight in the nursery. I am being put on hold by Nate to wash anymore pink things until the baby arrives though , just in case our ultrasound tech wasn't seeing things clearly! We have definitely planned for a little girl, but I guess you never really know until the baby arrives! One of my favorite gifts was the blanket my Mom has been knitting away on since we found out she was a girl. It turned out beautiful and I absolutely love it. It is such a wonderful gift from Grandma :). We feel so blessed to have such support and love from all of our family and friends. Thank you to everyone who was at this shower...it really meant a lot and was so much fun. The pictures above are various shots from the shower and in the following order:
1. my aunts, cousins, and Grandma from my Mom's side of the family, plus my Mom, sisters, and nephew Jed
2. the tray full of items that will go in our diaper bag that were part of a game we played
3. my sister in law, Mother in law, and aunt from Nate's side, and close family friends that attended
4. a picture of the baby blanket my Mom knitted for our baby girl
5. my sweet neice Emery touching the baby bump...it was so precious

37 Weeks!

It has been a good week with lots of exciting baby things. We are now at 37 weeks, so I am technically "full term" and this baby could make her entrance at anytime! I can't believe we are to this point...we have been waiting for April to get here and it actually is now...ahhh! We had a checkup Friday and received more good news. The doctor said I am about 80% effaced and 2-3 cm dilated, so progress has been made. I was glad to hear that because I definitely feel way more uncomfortable and am feeling the pains and cramps that go along with my cervix changing! Her heartbeat was strong and she has grown in the past week. Nate and I can't wait to meet her!!! I also had a shower this week, hosted by my wonderful friends at school. They really went all out and did such a beautiful job with the decorations, food and gifts. Our baby's closet has definitely grown from all of the precious outfits and dresses we received. I felt very loved, appreciated, and supported. I am going to love being home with my baby during my maternity leave, but I will miss seeing my friends on a daily basis at school. I really do have a great staff that I work with. The pictures are of my huge 37 week belly and the baby shower!
